WebSplash: portfolio website migration

New guidance for visitors following historical WebSplash links.

Looking for the original WebSplash demo? This page now offers a practical migration guide.

Give every project a clear destination

A portfolio is more useful when each project has a page explaining its goal, your role, the work and the outcome. A grid can help visitors browse, but the project page supplies the context someone following an external link expects.

Use descriptive image text, readable captions and appropriately sized images. Publish only work and client material you have permission to show. Avoid inventing endorsements or presenting former owners' work as your own.

Move projects into maintainable content

  1. Back up the database and media library, then test the migration on a staging copy.
  2. List project addresses, image galleries, project categories and any custom content types supplied by the old theme.
  3. Keep content types available during the transition, or export and carefully convert projects into ordinary pages. Confirm that images and captions survived.
  4. Choose a replacement layout that works with keyboard navigation and small screens. Test a project with many images and one with mostly text.

Keep project addresses unchanged whenever possible. If you reorganize the portfolio, map each old project address to its corresponding new project page with a permanent redirect. A link to a specific project should not silently become a link to an unrelated collection.

If you cannot retain a former project because its content or rights are unavailable, do not manufacture a replacement history. Provide a clear missing-page response and links to current, accurately attributed work.

Check the experience after publishing

Open project links from outside the site, inspect image loading on mobile, and check the contact route. Include current project pages in the sitemap and review missing-page reports for overlooked addresses.
